DESCRIPTION:

In this introductory course you will learn everything you need to get started in the art of knitting on a knitting machine. Although knitting with two needles is the most well-known method of knitting, there are looms that allow us to knit much faster: knitting machines. They had their heyday in the 80s, being the domestic version of industrial machines. Today they are making a comeback, especially in France, where there are schools specialising in knitting, in England and in the USA. With practice and patience, knitting machines allow you to knit a scarf in just a few hours (or a jumper!). In our classes you will learn how to use them and make your first types of stitch. We will start with a more theoretical class focused on the history of knitting, types of machines, types of yarn, correct use of the knitting machine, etc. In the following classes we will investigate different types of stitch and the making of garments.

TO WHOM IS IT ADDRESSED:

This course is designed for creatives interested in fabric design. The magic of the knitting machine is being able to create a knitted garment from scratch using yarn, your only raw material. The grace of your garment will depend on the yarn and the type or types of stitch you choose. Although knitting with a knitting machine requires creativity, experimentation and patience, it offers endless possibilities. Likewise, the course is also aimed at creatives who have thought about starting out by creating knitted clothing and would like to know the potential of the knitting machine for their business.

GOALS:

- Know, in general terms, the history of machine knitting.
- Introduce yourself to the use of the manual knitting machine. It is important to be able to recognize the different parts of the machine to be aware of everything it can offer us, even though it may seem like a puzzle of different pieces and accessories.
- Know the different types of thread depending on the fiber, its thickness, and the type of yarn. Recognize its suitability in relation to the project at hand.
- Knit different types of stitches: stocking stitch, ribbed stitch, pearl stitch, openwork, etc. Learn the interplay between tension, type and thickness of yarn and the position of the knitting machine needles when knitting. (We will create a sample of stitches).
- Use the overlock (or knitting machine) to make garments.

METHODOLOGY:

We will start with a more theoretical class focused on the history of knitting, types of machines, types of thread, correct use of the knitting machine, etc. In the following classes we will investigate different types of knitting. A sample book will be made with the different stitches knitted in class. All our training is carried out by professionals within their disciplines and with extensive experience in teaching.

SYLLABUS:

- History of the point.

- Introduction to knitting machine: parts and gauge of the machine.

- Explanation of the different types of yarn depending on the fiber, the spinning process and the thickness.

- Play with the thread tension, the type of thread and the position of the knitting machine needles
to make any type of stitch.

- Knitting sample: plain, ribbed, openwork, among others.

- Made with overlock.

TEACHER:
